Liquor Maker Brown-Forman Profit Rises

Liquor producer Brown-Forman Corp. said Friday its third-quarter profit rose 10 percent from the addition of Casa Herradura premium telquilas along with higher global demand for its flagship Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey line as well as Finlandia vodka.

The Louisville-based distiller said it also benefited from favorable foreign exchange fluctuations but narrowed its profit forecast for the full fiscal year.

For the three months ended Jan. 31, Brown-Forman said it earned $116 million, or 94 cents a share, compared to $105.1 million, or 85 cents per share, in the same period a year ago. The year-ago results included a $6.5 million write-down from the company’s sale of its Hartmann luggage division. Read more

Cherry Coke Salad

40 oz Cherries; Dark, Pitted, 2 cn

3 oz Jello; Cherry Gelatin (1 pk)

20 oz Pineapple; Crushed, (1 Cn)

1 c Coca-Cola

1/2 c Chopped Pecans

Heat cherries and their juice to boiling. Remove from heat and add Jello. Stir. Add pinapple, juice and all. Pour in coke and nuts. Pour into an oiled 6-cup mold. Let cool, then refrigerate at least 2 hours or until set. Serve cold.

Cheese Scones

1 c All-purpose flour

1 1/2 ts Baking powder

1 ts Dry mustard

pn Salt 1 c Whole-wheat flour

3 ts Cold butter or margarine,

-cut in small pieces 3/4 c (3oz) finely shredded sharp

-Cheddar cheese 2/3 c Milk (about)

Butter This qualifies as a savory; a bit of a change from the usual scone. Preheat oven to 425F (220C). Lightly grease a large baking sheet; set aside. Sift all-purpose flour, baking powder, dry mustard and salt into a large bowl. Stir in the whole-wheat flour. With your fingers, rub in cold butter until mixture is crumbly. Stir in 1/2 cup cheese. Make a well in center of mixture; add milk and mix with a fork to make a dough that BARELY holds together (you may need to press dough together with your hands). Turn out onto floured surface and knead lightly. Roll out with a floured rolling pin or pat dough with your hands to make a round about 3/4-inch thick. Cut into rounds with a 2-inch fluted or plain cookie cutter. Place 1 to 1 1/2 inches apart on baking sheet; sprinkle with remaining 1/4 cup

cheese. Bake 8-10 minutes or until well risen and golden. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. When cold, split and serve with butter. Makes about 12 scones.

Champagne Punch

2 c Granulated sugar

2 c Fresh lemon juice

1 ea 750ml bottle dry white wine

1 ea 750ml bottle champagne

2 ea Large bottles of soda water

1/4 c Orange liqueur

1 ea Pineapple quartered, grated

In a large punch bowl, combine sugar, lemon juice, white wine, champagne, soda water liqueur and grated pineapple. Mix together well. Put in a large block on ice and garnish with additional pineapple and other fresh fruits such as strawberries. let mixture chill and serve in small glasses.
